What construction scheduling covers
A construction programme is only as good as the thinking underneath it. A clean-looking bar chart can still be wrong: the logic may be propped up by constraints, the apparent critical path may not reflect the work driving completion, or the durations may assume productivity the site cannot achieve. We start with how the project team intends to build the work, then develop a programme they can recognise, test and use.
That means:
Methodology and sequencing first. We work through staging, access, construction sequence and handovers with the project manager, superintendent and relevant discipline leads. The team reviews and affirms that the programme reflects the agreed approach; assumptions that remain unresolved are recorded, not buried in the dates.
A logic-linked programme in Primavera P6. Activities and relationships reflect the work to be done. We check open ends, justify constraints and lags, and trace the path driving completion rather than accepting whichever activities the software colours red.
Calendars and durations grounded in the job. Shifts, access windows, weather allowances and holidays are reflected in the plan. Key durations are tested against quantities, production rates and the resources available, not guessed to fit a target finish date.
Resources tested against the construction sequence. We examine whether labour, plant and workfaces can support the proposed plan. Where the engagement requires it, we resource- and cost-load the programme and examine the effect of resource limits on the dates, rather than assuming that loading alone makes the plan deliverable. Primavera P6's levelling settings can alter activity dates, so those effects need to be understood, not accepted blindly.
Interfaces built into the logic. Procurement and long-lead items, design release, approvals and authority decisions, and handovers between contractors and disciplines are scheduled as part of the work. If a decision or delivery can determine completion, it should not sit outside the programme as an undocumented assumption.
Progress measured against what actually happened. We maintain the programme using verified progress and project records, examine changes to the critical and near-critical paths, and explain emerging delay while there is still time to respond. Schedule risk analysis and schedule-quality checks support that judgement; they do not replace it.
